Q. Will I be assigned an advisor, and will I be able to communicate with that person on a regular basis?
A. San Diego City College has an academic counselor assigned specifically to support students. The counselor may be

Q. How much of the degree has to be taken through San Diego City College (SDCC) to meet residency requirements?
A. SDCC requires students to take 12 semester hours of coursework to establish residency. This includes distance learning courses.
Q. Will courses from other colleges transfer into your school degree plan?
A. Yes. San Diego City College recognizes college credit earned at any institution of higher education which is accredited by one of the regional accrediting associations of schools and colleges as identified by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation. Guaranteed transfer of courses exists with other colleges in the SOCNAV, SOCAD, SOCCOAST, and SOCMAR networks.
Q. How will classes be delivered?
A. Courses are offered on campus and on-line. Other delivery methods will include video, PDA, and independent study. Students who enroll in these delivery methods interact with their instructors via phone, e-mail or fax. Students take quizzes online, and take examinations by proctor and/or online. Courses may also be supported with textbooks, written materials, electronic bulletin boards, and other support systems.
Q. Is there a placement test?
A. The placement test, called assessment, is a tool used to assist students in selecting courses best suited to their abilities and educational goals. Specifically assessments help students identify their skill levels in English and Math. Assessment is a process that includes tests and other measures and is intended to assist students in meeting course prerequisites. Students may also meet course prerequisites based on factors such as past educational achievements in mathematics, English, or course completion.
Q. Do I have to own a computer to do distance learning?
A. Access to a computer is necessary for the on-line courses. Other programs such as SOCCOAST AFLOAT and NCPACE classes are on CD, for which no internet is required.
Q. Does your school accept credits from foreign institutions?
A. A transfer student from another college or university must follow set transfer procedures of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and have pursued a full-time course of study with a minimum GPS of 2.0 at the college the student was last authorized to attend. An official transcript must be filed.
Q. Can I take CLEP and other tests for credit towards a degree?
A. San Diego City College recognizes examination programs and awards credit based on the subject area and the individual's test score. The appropriate number of units will be posted to the student's transcript upon approval. CLEP/DANTES scores will count toward the Associate degree. A maximum of 30 units can be awarded for all non-traditional course work which includes CLEP and DANTES tests.
Q. How many courses can I take at a time?
A. SDCC recognizes three courses (12 units) as a maximum or full load during the fall and spring semesters and six units during the summer session.
Q. Will Tuition Assistance (TA) cover the costs for this type of study?
A. TA covers 100% of tuition costs at SDCC. A copy of the student's TA Authorization Form must accompany their registration form.
Q. How do I apply for grants/financial aid?
A. Federal Financial Aid may be available through grants and loan programs. In general, to qualify for aid you must demonstrate financial eligibility through the regular application process. Receiving funding through the Tuition Assistance program does not disqualify any student from applying for financial aid. You can reach the Financial Aid Department by calling (619) 388-3501 Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm Pacific time, and Fridays from 8 am to 2 pm Pacific time. Q. Does your school offer scholarships to military and family members?
A. Scholarships are available to all San Diego City College students and are granted to students who demonstrated excellence, academic achievement and/or wish to pursue educational or career goals. Q. How do I use my VA benefits?
A. San Diego City College is approved by the Bureau of School Approvals, California State Department of Education, to offer programs to veterans and eligible persons seeking benefits under the Federal Public Laws and the California Veterans Educational Laws. SDCC follows the guidelines issued by the Council for Private and Post-Secondary and Vocational Education which apply to all institutions enrolling veterans and other eligible persons for veteran's benefits. Students who plan to use the Montgomery GI Bill are required to pay the full cost of tuition at the time of enrollment. Information concerning Education Benefits may be found at

Q. Does the student pay in-state or out-of-state fees?
A. All military students with proper identification will be charged the in-state $20 per unit. Their families also qualify for the in-state residents charges.
Q. I'm in the Navy. Whom should I contact in the Navy to explain educational opportunities available
to me?
A. Information about tuition assistance, general academic counseling, free testing and college preparation courses is available at the
Navy College Program Web site or at your local Navy College Office.
Q. How do I contact Distance Learning?
A. San Diego City College offers a broad range of courses on-line. The majority of instructional time will be spent viewing the programs and completing assigned readings in the text and/or workbook. For more information please contact the Distance Education Office at (619) 388-3543.
Q. What degrees are offered?
A. We offer degrees in Business, Communication and Writing, Criminal Justice, Education, Engineering Technology, Health Sciences, and Nursing and Science to name a few. For the Military we offer degrees in Electronics, Business, Liberal Arts, and Electricity as rating relevant to your work experience. Q. How do I get started? What's first?
A. First you need to fill out an application for admission. You can do that on campus or online at
http://studentweb.sdccd.edu. Once admitted you will go through assessment, orientation, educational planning with a counselor to develop an educational plan and your student progress will be followed.
Q. When should I speak to an advisor?
A. Students should contact and advisor as soon as they receive acceptance notification from the admission office. Advisors/counselors can be contacted at (619) 388-3540.
Q. How do I apply for graduation?
A. Graduation is not automatic upon completion of requirements. A student who expects to receive the Associate Degree or the Certificate of Achievement must file a Petition for Graduation in the Evaluations Office. A petition for an Associate Degree evaluation should be submitted one year before the student plans to graduate.
Q. What is Mecomtronics?
A. MECOMTRONICS (MEChanics + COMputers + Telecommunications + electRONICS) is defined as an Engineering Technology discipline that combines the areas of mechanical and electronics technology and computer hardware and software systems. This discipline has been created to respond to the specialized demands for the multifunctional engineering technician. MECOMTRONICS technicians are prepared with the knowledge and skills to work in a technologically diversified business environment. These technicians will be able to participate on a team to specify, troubleshoot, develop, design, and prepare for production of cost-efficient, state-of-the-art products which can compete for value in a global economy.
